Tutorial 4 - Impulse Drum Machine

In this tutorial we will have a close look at the features of Ableton’s built in Drum machine.. Impulse

Over the next 13 videos we will taking you through the key areas of Ableton Live’s Entry level software Intro.

First up we will be taking a look at the main features of the software from its user interface to the differences between the Session & Arrangement views.

We will then show you how to create a drum beat using the Impulse Drum machine,
create a baseline and some synth stabs using the built in Sampler and to finish up add some simple effects, do a quick arrangement and export your song to make it ready to burn onto CD.

iMovie 11 has a new audio editing interface along with additional features such as easy fade in and out, background noise removal and equalizer. I had to undertake a quick editing project for my school. A group of kids are dancing to a piece of music called Palladio by Jenkins, and the choreographer lass needed a chunk to be hacked out of the music. I relish the idea of being considered a budding George Martin (or perhaps a budding Jon Astley!!) so I thought I would film the work. Having said that, I do apologise to Jenkins for butchering his work - however disguised the edit may be!

It took me about 35 mins in all, so the 8 mins or so I show here is minus a few experiments with different joins. The final piece is an edit whereby 1:10 is joined to 3:20, by means of a crossfade. The 2 regions were joined together via Logic’s “Merge” command. I think this is fascinating stuff, and obviously similar results can be achieved on a PC. Audacity is fast becoming a very fully featured piece of software (although I’m not sure if it has a crossfade tool), so that may be a viable alternative to Logic Express. LE is more of a music studio (someday I’ll show that) and is overkill if it is solely used for editing.

This video is part 3 of a video series called ‘How to use Nero Vision’ in which I show you how to perform certain tasks in the program in each part, whilst explaining key, basic concepts that are required for understanding. In this video, I show you how to add effects, transitions and music in Nero Vision. At current, this video will be the last in the series. However, if someone (particularly the person who requested this how to series) would like a particular concept explained, I would be happy to make more videos on how to use Nero Vision. I feel I have now covered all of the basic (and some not-so-basic), key concepts of the software, so any future video on Nero Vision will be on a request basis for performing certain, individual tasks in the program.
