What is a good music recording studio program/software to have?

Basically i want to start recording music, and incorporating audio changes and to be able to play with the vocals and instrumentals a bit, what is a cheap software i can purchase or a free one i can download? any ideas on the process?

    try audacity its free and lets u edit parts u don’t want or add in other parts or play them in the backround
