I currently have Audacity just because it is free, but I would like something that you could put MIDI drums in. I used Pro Tools 7 or 8 in a class at school and I was very pleased with it, however when I got home, I realized that it cost a little too much for me. So what I’m looking for is, in a way, a cheaper version of Pro Tools (something I can record live guitar and bass on and add MIDI drums). Thank you!
To expand on what h2_sut_lover lover said, not too long ago Pro Tools realeased 3 new ’starter’ versions. There’s Pro Tools Essentials which comes with an interface, Pro Tools Key Studio that comes with a 49 key keyboard, and Pro Tools Vocal Studio that comes with a Mic. If you like Pro Tools I would look into Essentials. It will give you the interface you need to record guitar/bass, as well as allow you to make MIDI within Pro Tools. Its not quite as beefy as LE/M-Powered (Only 16 tracks) but it’ll be good if you’re on a budget and just starting out.
Hope this provides some insight,

at the bottom of that link is trial software of about 8 different companies for free
there is no best, only favorites. depending on your workflow you’ll decide you like either one or the other most so get some of those free trials. pretty much all of them besides audacity have MIDI channels/ports/routes
