Audacity is about the best freeware.
An audio noise gate is used to gate out or remove a noise or unwanted sound within a track, and it can be set at different ratios in order to catch that sound. I’m so confused by all the different music software around, i have the guitar and vocals work myself but i need a drum beat and base line to add in but obviously i don’t have a drum kit or a bass guitar. Also (if you can) is there any way i can just record it with my laptop as i dont have any mikes or cables. Thanks

For me , the best music software is DUBTURBO. I find it very usefull and practical. It’s an all in one software which means it can make dubsteps, beats, trance , techno, remixes and edit any music you have. Video tutorials and demos will be provided for you to make it easier to use. Music output is professional and quality and you can choose thousands of song samples and beats to mix up with your music if you are planning to make one.
The Beatles pioneered several recording techniques, such as double tracking, isolated miking, and the use of fore-tracks. Find out how the Beatles recorded their music with information from an independent recording engineer and producer in this free video on music recording.

What is a good beginner software I could buy to use with a keyboard to start out with. I play some music, but I want to get more into recording and making music and I don’t know what software would be best to start with on a mac. Please don’t say Garage Band because that’s what I use now and I need an upgrade.
That’s a consequence when you buy a free version. You’ll be asked to upgrade an pay after the trial. Anyway to be safe you can purchase a good music making software that works in almost all platforms (Mac, Windows, Android and etc) like dubturbo. I’m using dubturbo now because I have 2 computers one is mac and the other is operated by windows. You can make beats, dubsteps, remix , record and produce any music you you want. It’s easy to use because tutorials are attached with the software. It’s less complicated and user interface is easy to understand. You can make a software review on the attached source before you make any download. it will help you a lot.
I just got the Alesis io Dock for my iPad and I’m trying to choose the best recording app.
I have garage band but it leaves something to be desired in the way of making legitimate sounding music, ie No vocal compressor and things of that nature.
So what is better, Multitrack DAW or Meteor ?
Well first off any digital recording/editing software for audio is a DAW (digital audio workstation) system. I haven’t used Meteor but Garage Band seems pretty user friendly for beginners. There are hundreds of free plugins on the internet. I believe that Garage Band uses AU and VST plugins. Garage band does have compressors. Garage band also has more editing options and goes a little more in depth.
A mixing console setup should include faders, a patch bay, phone jacks, limiters, compressors, outboard EQs, mic pries, referbs and gates. Understand the anatomy of a good mixing console with information from an independent recording engineer and producer in this free video on music recording.

I am a singer looking for a software to record my music… Any help would be much appreciated.
Reaper. Free for a month but it is only about £50. And it is good. Or get something on Ebay s/hand. I just sold Cubasis Go! for £10. That’s adequate. Why free? You are going to have to get microphone/s, monitor speakers, sound deadening, good sound card, maybe mixer etc.
Try Ableton Live (I think you can download Lite for free)
I am a guitarist and I would like to start recording my own music. I mostly play folk and blues. I have a PC and would like to know what are some good programs and software to use.
I have been recording music on a PC for about 10 years now. There is a lot of software you can use, but I will drill it down to some of the best and most common software for you.
1. Sonar X1 - http://www.cakewalk.com/products/sonar/
2. Protools - http://www.avid.com/US/products/family/Pro-Tools
3. Ableton - http://www.ableton.com/
4. Cubase - http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/cubase/start.html
You will need to buy a good dedicated sound card that allows you to do "0 latency" recording. In my experience, even if you have a fast PC, the built in sound card is not efficient and will have latency. A dedicated sound card has it’s own built in clock that keeps all the audio and midi tracks in sync and you will get a lot more tracks.
A lot of sound cards will come bundled with software, so you will want to spend some time looking around http://www.musiciansfriend.com type sites and look at USB or Firewire sound cards.
One of my favorite sound cards and it includes a bunch of GREAT software is the Digidesign Mbox 2. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/digidesign-mbox-2-factory-bundle - It will give you just about everything you will need to get started and the preamps and converters in the Mbox 2 will keep your music sounding full and warm.
Good luck and I hope this helps get you started.
