Do you think this is nuts? I’m going to try to review all of the major DAWs, in other words all of the music editing software, music mixing software, music making software, recording music software, audio production software, whatever you want to call it. While each one has acquired it’s own fanbase, not many musicians would be tempted to trash an investment that can sometimes have a very long tedious learning curve to make the switch to another program, or would you? Another case in point is that the biggest, most popular programs have already reached a higher level of growth. But on the other hand,  I don’t believe that if any or all of them vanished overnight leaving only one, would it be that terrible? They all work well and you’d still be able to make great music! (assuming that you make great music:).

It’s nice to be able to compare/review each product because they all have different strenghts and weaknesses. Hopefully this will help you with your decision making as to what audio production software would work the best for you and your budget constraints (if any exist). The nice thing about some of these programs is that they have a less expensive version available that while not quite as fancy as the full fledged version, will still get the job done quite nicely.

So what about that learning curve? Don’t bury your head in the sand here. There will always be a learning curve. Like most programs available now, they are becoming more and more in tune with either Mac or Windows operating systems, which helps to lesson that fabled learning curve. Not to mention that these music editing software programs tend to borrow from the competition, hence making it easier to learn them and if you stay with the same company, but upgrade you’ve got even less of a learning curve. So you can relax it shouldn’t be that hard.

Sometime down the line you may want to switch. Like every thing else in this world nothing is static or stays the same, including recording music software programs. At some point you may want to try another product, it might have some feature in it that the program that you’re currently using is missing and you know that you just can’t live without. Personally I love technology and want every new gadget out there. If you’re anything like me I’m sure that eventually you are gonna want to try something new.

With that said I need to remind you that again nothing is static here. These music making software programs are constantly being changed and updated. Which on the one hand is great, but on the other hand can be frustrating. It’s the nature of the beast or anything electronic nowadays. Repeat after me, there will always be upgrades and improvements. Some you will love, others you will hate. Get use to it.

Next up, support. Well we all know what support can be like. Some audio production software companies do a pretty good job with support, others not so hot. I would suggest that you first check out any FAQ’s and second if they have a forum go there. Forums can oftentimes be the best place to find answers to your questions or problems. Most of these music making software companies are not set up for unlimited support. Use it wisely.

The famous artists have the facilities of recording their songs in their own studios with all the crew of engineers and technicians helping them with the instruments etc. However, if you are a beginner beat maker, you would need to consider many factors before starting to make your own beats and tunes.

You will need to keep in mind your own budget and the availability of beats and instruments. It is very difficult for the amateur beat makers to take decisions regarding the instruments and the beats they need to buy.

In order to give yourself a start, you should consider buying the beats from the professional artists.

There are many beats available on the internet which you can buy and use in your own songs and tunes. However, you will need to make sure that these beats come from a reliable source and are of good quality. You will need to first consider what style of music you are producing and then you can ascertain the usefulness of the beats you have available.

Also, while making a purchase through the internet, you can first download and listen to the demo beats from any website and if you like their quality then you can buy the beats that you think will be useful for your songs.

There are also exclusive beats available on the internet, which are very costly, but they are of great quality and can be used for the commercial purposes. You can also use these beats to create your demo CDs, which can be sent to the independent record labels. You should record your best songs and tunes on your demo CDs, which will allow you the best chance of being selected by the record labels.

The exclusive beats can be used in your songs; however, you should ensure that these beats are royalty free, which will relieve you from paying the royalties for using these beats in your songs. There are also some non-exclusive beats available on the internet, which do not cost much but since they are non-exclusive it means that anyone can use them. Hence you can only use the non-exclusive beats for creating your demo CDs and they are not for your exclusive right.

After getting the beats you can either use these beats to get an idea from them and start creating your own beats, or you can use them in your songs. You also need to have a music software, which will allow you to produce a variety of beats and songs on your computer, this can be a good replacement of a full fledge studio that might cost you too much.

However, you will need to buy some instruments in order to start producing your own music. While purchasing the instruments, always consider if you really require them and go for those instruments only which you badly need to get start.

In this way you can just start and go on with the beat making and producing music.

Recently I had published a side-by-side comparison of the iPhone 3G and T-Mobile G1 DVD Converter which evoked an interesting debate.(from:iphonehacks)

Here comes another side-by-side comparison of Apple’s iPhone 3G with RIM’s BlackBerry Storm, which is considered as another iPhone Killer.

BlackBerry Storm is expected to be released some time in November exclusively by Verizon in the US and Vodafone in UK.

Hardware Spec
Dimension:
Storm = 4.4 x 2.4 x 0.6 inches
iPhone 3G = 5.5 x 2.4 x 0.48 inches
Weight:
Storm = 155g
iPhone = 133g
Screen Size:
Storm = 3.2 inches
iPhone = 3.5 inches
Camera:
Storm = 3.2M pixel
iPhone = 2M pixel
Memory:
Storm = 1GB on board + 16GB expandable with MicroSD
iPhone = 8GB / 16GB (No expansion)
Battery:
Storm = 5.5hrs talk time / 360 hrs standby
iPhone = 5hrs talk time / 300 hrs standby

Unlike T-Mobile G1 that we have reviewed earlier, BlackBerry Storm “steals” the design and looks much like the iPhone 3G. However, it does not look as sleek as iPhone 3G. It’s a little bit thicker (0.14inches more) and heavier (22g more) than iPhone 3G. And, surprisingly, BlackBerry Storm does not come with Wi-Fi support or they probably consider Verizon’s 3G network is good enough.

BlackBerry Storm’s screen is also a little bit smaller (3.2 inch) as compared to iPhone 3G (3.5 inch), however it sports a slightly higher resolution (460×360 pixels) than iPhone 3G (460×360 pixels).

Winner: iPhone 3G

Tips: How to convert DVD to iPhone 3G

Input Method

With the success of iPhone’s multi-touch interface, touch is now the standard for any new smartphone. Like iPhone, Storm does not have physical slide-out keyboard and uses the screen as input, in fact its RIM’s first smartphone to feature a touch screen. However, RIM highlights that the touch technology developed on Storm is somewhat different to other touch screen smartphone available. RIM refers its touch technology as “Clickable Screen”. That means, when users press key on screen, they can actually feel the key pressed and release, just like you press the mouse button. They call it a game changing touch technology that makes on-screen keyboard more appealing.

Also, like T-Mobile G1, it will have built-in cut and paste capability across applications a feature missing from iPhone 3G.

Winner:Its difficult to call a winner on this one, until we get feedback from users on RIM’s touch technology. We love iPhone 3G’s revolutionary multi-touch interface.

Multimedia
Multimedia support is not the strong area of RIM smartphones, as they predominantly targets business users. Storm is developed with multiple support in mind to lure more casual users. Standard feature like music and video playback is included. A wide range of audio format (including MP3, AAC, WMA, etc) and video format (including MPEG4, WMV, etc). Storm also allows you to sync iTunes music files via BlackBerry Media Sync and has its own media software to manage your music.

iPhone 3G is the best iPod Apple has ever created. The music and video playback experience is awesome. And, Apple continues to update features like Genius Playlist into iPhone makes iPhone’s multimedia support nearly unbeatable. With its seamless integration with iTunes Store, you can download songs wirelessly or sync it between desktop using iTunes. iPhone 3G also supports a wide range of music formats but only plays Quick Time video.

Winner: iPhone 3G

Camera & Video Recording

Apple did not upgrade the camera in iPhone 3G, its still a basic 2 megapixel camera while Storm comes with 3.2 megapixel camera and includes video recording capability. Storm also includes a flash and auto focus for its camera.

Winner: BlackBerry Storm

Modem Capability
iPhone 3G does not support tethering and Apple tends to ban any applications in App Store that adds this capability. The only option you have is to jailbreak the iPhone and use jailbreak apps such as PDANet, iPhoneModem etc. BlackBerry Storm, on the other hands, comes with tethering built-in.

Winner: BlackBerry Storm

Enterprise Feature

Apple has made quite a few strides to take market share from RIM in the enterprise area. iPhone 3G, with built-in support for Microsoft’s ActiveSync protocol, lets enterprise users to access Microsoft Exchange’s services. Also, it takes a great step forwards to support Cisco IPsec VPN, which is a standard in enterprise wireless security. Further, it incorporates a feature to let administrator to wipe data remotely, in case the iPhone is lost or stolen.

RIM is always the leader in enterprise wireless devices. Storm, by no means, continues to lead in this area. The enterprise support is outstanding that different security policies can be defined, such that administrator may enable or shutdown specific bluetooth profiles; and even, to disable its digital camera access.

Winner: BlackBerry Storm

To sum up, BlackBerry strikes a balance between business and causal use. It’s, by far, the sleekest BlackBerry; which should help RIM lure causal customers.

Is it another iPhone killer? Its difficult to conclude. iPhone 3G and BlackBerry both come with some unique features that neither have and they are positioned differently in the market.
However, I still fail to understand the omission of Wi-Fi in BlackBerry Storm, its true that BlackBerry is targeted at the business users who use it primarily for email, but still it seems like a major disadvantage over iPhone 3G.

As a consumer device, iPhone will definitely win thanks to the iPod application, its Safari browser which is easily the most advanced web browser on a portable device which makes browsing the internet on the iPhone a treat and overall for its cool factor. But if you turn to some business-savvy users and enterprise, BlackBerry is still the de-facto choice.

RIM has also not disclosed the pricing or the official shipping date.

You can checkout the demo video of BlackBerry Storm to get an overview:

BlackBerry Storm, T-Mobile G1 and soon to be released Nokia’s XpressMusic phone (Nokia’s first touch screen phone) might or might not end up being iPhone killers but they are healthy competition to Apple’s iPhone 3G that will ensure that Apple constantly innovates which in the end is beneficial for consumers like us.

Let us know which one is a winner from your point of view and why?

If you’re old enough to remember what it was like to only have a few AM radio stations to listen to, you may be overwhelmed by the technology revolution.   The quality of audio entertainment and the options for accessing music have progressed at such a rapid rate; it’s hard for anyone to keep up!

Some of us still remember how much better everything sounded when we swapped AM’s crackly monotones for the double-sided stereo sound of FM.  Then CD-quality audio arrived and you could now feel like you were “there”.  Now another great leap forward has given us the digital surround sound experience.

Just as sound quality has improved, so have our options for how, when and where we listen.  As recordings moved from vinyl to tape and then CD, content could be enjoyed wherever you had a player.  And thanks to the Walkman and other portable devices, such as MP3 players, we could enjoy music and other audio content on the move.

Now the Internet has changed everything again. Suddenly, music is just bits and bytes that can be moved around as easily as sending an email.

Although this was good news for consumers, the recording industry faced a big problem. If it was this easy to swap, share and access music, how could they control it?  To date, they can’t because the industry has failed to embrace the digital world – instead they’ve focused their attention on condemning the fledgling online music industry and declaring war on file sharing sites, such as Napster.

But although downloading gets all the press, it’s not the only way to access music online.

Who listens to online radio?

Many AM/FM radio stations simulcast over the Internet, but true Internet Radio stations operate exclusively online and continue to grow.  Where traditional radio broadcasts to thousands of people in a particular location, Internet Radio narrowcasts online to listeners worldwide and offers specific content for a specific audience.

Internet Radio has everything from commercial and non-mainstream music to talkback and niche interest shows.  Although it’s narrow focus means it may have a smaller audience than commercial radio, its audiences are deliberately tuning in to be exposed to content relevant to their interests.

Internet Radio relies on member subscriptions but most of its revenue comes from advertising.  Although it may not have huge audiences, it reaches a targeted niche of the market and is very appealing to advertisers.

Why?  Pretend you are trying to sell software for stock market analysis.  Would you prefer to spend your marketing budget advertising to males who are 24-39 and earning $25K-$60K per annum OR reaching males who are 24-39 and earning $25K-$60K and who love trading on the foreign exchange markets?  Imagine the ROI and I’m sure you can see why Internet Radio is so appealing. Perhaps it’s something your business could consider.

Unfortunately, Australia is lagging behind the US where satellite radio means hundreds of stations can be received in listeners’ homes, offices or even their cars.  But we can still access tens of thousands of online stations with the only limitation being the download limit on your internet plan.   To give you an idea, an hour’s worth of listening to streaming radio is equivalent to a 30mb download.

So, if you are bored with the standard fare most radio stations offer, why not sample the smorgasbord of online radio stations?  There’s bound to be one catering to your needs and interests!
