Do you think this is nuts? I’m going to try to review all of the major DAWs, in other words all of the music editing software, music mixing software, music making software, recording music software, audio production software, whatever you want to call it. While each one has acquired it’s own fanbase, not many musicians would be tempted to trash an investment that can sometimes have a very long tedious learning curve to make the switch to another program, or would you? Another case in point is that the biggest, most popular programs have already reached a higher level of growth. But on the other hand,  I don’t believe that if any or all of them vanished overnight leaving only one, would it be that terrible? They all work well and you’d still be able to make great music! (assuming that you make great music:).

It’s nice to be able to compare/review each product because they all have different strenghts and weaknesses. Hopefully this will help you with your decision making as to what audio production software would work the best for you and your budget constraints (if any exist). The nice thing about some of these programs is that they have a less expensive version available that while not quite as fancy as the full fledged version, will still get the job done quite nicely.

So what about that learning curve? Don’t bury your head in the sand here. There will always be a learning curve. Like most programs available now, they are becoming more and more in tune with either Mac or Windows operating systems, which helps to lesson that fabled learning curve. Not to mention that these music editing software programs tend to borrow from the competition, hence making it easier to learn them and if you stay with the same company, but upgrade you’ve got even less of a learning curve. So you can relax it shouldn’t be that hard.

Sometime down the line you may want to switch. Like every thing else in this world nothing is static or stays the same, including recording music software programs. At some point you may want to try another product, it might have some feature in it that the program that you’re currently using is missing and you know that you just can’t live without. Personally I love technology and want every new gadget out there. If you’re anything like me I’m sure that eventually you are gonna want to try something new.

With that said I need to remind you that again nothing is static here. These music making software programs are constantly being changed and updated. Which on the one hand is great, but on the other hand can be frustrating. It’s the nature of the beast or anything electronic nowadays. Repeat after me, there will always be upgrades and improvements. Some you will love, others you will hate. Get use to it.

Next up, support. Well we all know what support can be like. Some audio production software companies do a pretty good job with support, others not so hot. I would suggest that you first check out any FAQ’s and second if they have a forum go there. Forums can oftentimes be the best place to find answers to your questions or problems. Most of these music making software companies are not set up for unlimited support. Use it wisely.

My dad built a music studio nothin fancy but what are some good softwares and equipment to use?(we also have a sound booth)

I agree with the other post, FL Studio all the way! Here’s the free demo: http://flstudio.image-line.com/documents/download.html

If you need help getting started with it, press F1 while it’s open or visit a site like youtube and search "FL Studio tutorials"

If you decide to purchase one of the full editions, here’s an Instant 10% Discount you can use when you buy directly from the developers of FL at Image-Line:
https://support.image-line.com/jshop/shop.php?offer=Default&promo=BFHEHAH486

Here’s a comparison of the editions’ features. For recording, you’ll need Producer or Signature.

http://flstudio.image-line.com/documents/features.html

You get free lifetime updates for the products you purchase, so you’ll get FL 11, 12, 13 ect.. free once they are released. You also get official forum access at http://forum.image-line.com

good luck to you and your dad!

All I want is somewhere to jot down my songs in sheet music format. I don’t need to be able to preview it or record my keystrokes or anything, I just need to be able to set a time and key signature and then click where I want notes.

It sounds like you want a copy of MuseScore free music and composition software. http://musescore.org/

I want to buy a mic and record some vocals while creating some digital/techno music for the background. What’s a decent free download I can use? Someone suggested ‘Audacity’ to me, but I wanted to check to see what else is out there. Thanks!

You can choose between FL studio and Dubturbo but I personally recommend DUBTURBO.
Dubturbo (full version) is way cheaper than fl costing around $30. Although performance are almost the same, dubturbo is easier to use and Uncomplicated. Aside from making beats, remixes, technos, dubsteps you can also edit any music you have using it.
If you’re a beginner you do not have to worry because you will be provided with video tutorials and demos to get you started. And one thing, it works well in almost all platforms (mac, windows, android and etc) You can check out my source for a software review. It will be a good source.

I am not worried about the price at all, i just want to know the best music editing software that i can buy to create my own beats and edit my own songs

For me the Best is something that is EASY, UNCOMPLICATED and Practical. Only one software passed my criteria and that is Dubturbo. I’ve been using it for almost 5 months now and I got no serious issues with it. It is the cheapest music making software in the market and yet the easiest to use.
Here’s my small review.
1. Cost around 30 usd
2. Friendly interface
3. Multi Purpose: Can make beats, remixes, technos, dubsteps and edit music you have
4. Works in almost all platforms (windows, mac, pc)
5. Attached with video tutorials to get you started
6. High quality studio beats
It’s a software you dont wanna miss. You can check out some reviews , one of it is on the attached source. It will help you a lot. Hope this helps.

I make youtube video’s and I’m wanting a video editing software for Christmas. What program should I ask for? Also, I’m looking for something with a reasonable price but still does good.
I’m also wanting a type of software where I can record my music and edit music.

I used dubturbo . Its currently a hot item now in the market because its an all in one software. Dubturbo can work in almost all platforms (Mac, Windows android and etc) You can make remix, dubsteps, beats, record, create and edit music. A full version of dubturbo is less than 40 dollars i think. I dont recommend free software because features are limited and time will come you’ll be asked to purchase a full version. I got dubturbo from here http://dubturbo-beats.com/

I am looking to get started creating, recording and editing audio, and I am looking for a software that an do all three. I would like to be able to create beats and sounds on the computer itself, but I also have a keyboard, electric drums, electric guitar and electric bass. I have lots of experience with music, but minimal experience editing. I’m looking to stay under a $100 budget. So far I like the looks of: Ableton, Mixcraft, ACID, sonar, and especially reason. Do you have a favorite out of those or any better suggestions?

Reason and Ableton SO PROOOOO,pay for them with no regret.

Stunning stuff from Celemony.

Direct Note Access
the new Melodyne dimension

Direct Note Access is a technology that makes the impossible possible: for the first time in audio recording history you can identify and edit individual notes within polyphonic audio material. The unique access that Melodyne affords to pitch, timing, note lengths and other parameters of melodic notes will now also be afforded to individual notes within chords.
