Do you think this is nuts? I’m going to try to review all of the major DAWs, in other words all of the music editing software, music mixing software, music making software, recording music software, audio production software, whatever you want to call it. While each one has acquired it’s own fanbase, not many musicians would be tempted to trash an investment that can sometimes have a very long tedious learning curve to make the switch to another program, or would you? Another case in point is that the biggest, most popular programs have already reached a higher level of growth. But on the other hand,  I don’t believe that if any or all of them vanished overnight leaving only one, would it be that terrible? They all work well and you’d still be able to make great music! (assuming that you make great music:).

It’s nice to be able to compare/review each product because they all have different strenghts and weaknesses. Hopefully this will help you with your decision making as to what audio production software would work the best for you and your budget constraints (if any exist). The nice thing about some of these programs is that they have a less expensive version available that while not quite as fancy as the full fledged version, will still get the job done quite nicely.

So what about that learning curve? Don’t bury your head in the sand here. There will always be a learning curve. Like most programs available now, they are becoming more and more in tune with either Mac or Windows operating systems, which helps to lesson that fabled learning curve. Not to mention that these music editing software programs tend to borrow from the competition, hence making it easier to learn them and if you stay with the same company, but upgrade you’ve got even less of a learning curve. So you can relax it shouldn’t be that hard.

Sometime down the line you may want to switch. Like every thing else in this world nothing is static or stays the same, including recording music software programs. At some point you may want to try another product, it might have some feature in it that the program that you’re currently using is missing and you know that you just can’t live without. Personally I love technology and want every new gadget out there. If you’re anything like me I’m sure that eventually you are gonna want to try something new.

With that said I need to remind you that again nothing is static here. These music making software programs are constantly being changed and updated. Which on the one hand is great, but on the other hand can be frustrating. It’s the nature of the beast or anything electronic nowadays. Repeat after me, there will always be upgrades and improvements. Some you will love, others you will hate. Get use to it.

Next up, support. Well we all know what support can be like. Some audio production software companies do a pretty good job with support, others not so hot. I would suggest that you first check out any FAQ’s and second if they have a forum go there. Forums can oftentimes be the best place to find answers to your questions or problems. Most of these music making software companies are not set up for unlimited support. Use it wisely.

I am unsure if i want to use external equipment or Pc based audio/midi sequencing software or use them together some how.

Equipment/instruments

I have a simple usb interface for midi to use with Yamaha NP30 76-key keyboard
Guitar is direct to pc sound card (XFI Xtreme audio pci) through line in. Limited connectivity

I am considering buying a mixer "Boss BR-600 Digital 8 Track Recorder"

Software

I did find a copy of cakewalk sonar, but i found it to advanced for starting out.
Now tending towards Cubase sx

I used demo of both these programs years ago on a old Future Music cover disk and made some good music with them.

Any comments welcomed and some advice on starting out and getting kit together.
Would it be best to stay away from computers or make it all work together
Thanks for advice so far, some good links too

Still no mics for recording Jumbae, voice , acoustic guitar,
The Br600 does have mics reported to be quite good…
Guitar is semi acoustic - that is it has a pickup
i also have a Acoustic and Electric PRS copy

The problem with 8 tracks is there’s only 8 tracks which limits what you can input into a song. Computers are good because you can have unlimited tracks depending on your memory and as long as your interface has a good pre-amp it’ll sound good too.

Computers may be harder to understand and work with but that’s the direction i would go because you can fiddle and change songs with way more effects and editing tools than an 8 track. If your going to spend more money it might be a good idea to upgrade your interface to one with a better pre-amp.

If you just want to plug in and play then go for the 8 track, can’t beat them for simplicity.

That’s the extent of my knowledge (which isn’t much) but i hope it helps in some small way.

When you consider running a membership site, you’ll need to look at the information you’re going to supply to your members. For more detail go to: www.starting-membership-site.com. Content is always needed for a website, but for many people creating their own product from scratch is too daunting a task. But, there’s an easier solution to get you started, and if you follow this correctly your membership site will be the best it could ever be.

The first thing you need to do is decide what your membership site is going to be about. Once you know what you are offering your members, the next task is to then create those products. Now this is where the majority of people fail, because they have no idea how to create the products. Is there a simple way to create these videos, ebooks, software and scripts, you are asking yourself? The answer is yes. Today, you are going to learn how easy it is to create your own products, and not only that, but have instant products to offer your members.

Private label rights, is something a lot of people buy, but very few people use in the correct way. You see, when you buy PLR then you should already have in mind how you can convert this to a unique item. Unique doesn’t mean adding a couple of words here and there, but making so many changes that the original creator doesn’t recognized it as the same.

When you buy good products, you will find that the research has already been completed for you, and you can then use your purchases as a platform to create an even better product. You need to decide how to change these purchases and then set time aside to do that.

If you buy an eBook, then you need to consider adding a few new chapters to the book, renaming the title and also the chapter headings, as well as rewriting the rest of the book. Once you have that completed, then you need to create stunning new graphics. For more detail go to: www.secure-member-area.com. Can you enhance the package by adding in a video or audio? You are looking all the time to produce something that is top quality.

To stand out from the crowd, you want to go that extra mile in your production, rather than thinking anything will do. Once you have everything ready, you then need to consider the rights you are going to give your customers.

One of the rights many people are looking for are master resale rights; they want to have a package that is high quality, that they can sell onto their customers without doing a lot of extra work.

When you sell a digital item online, people want an instant download, and you should have already got this in place for your business. There are many companies that do this automatically for you, or you can purchase a script which will help you.

E-books have certain abilities and qualities that other mediums don´t possess.

For example, e-books are fairly easy to produce and their production cost in terms of money is zero. Just think about it: you don’t need a publisher, a printing press, offset film, ink, paper, or even a distributor. You just need a great concept, the ability to write it or to hire a writer, and the right software to make it.

Also, e-books have the possibility of an easy and rapid online distribution. They are also easily updated; they don´t require a reprint. All you need is to go into your first creation and make the opportune modifications. Because of this flexibility, e-books can change and increase the size as fast as you can type.

E-books are also immediately obtainable. You don’t have to go to a bookstore. All you have to do is download it from a website, and save in your computer.

E-books can be interactive. This is one of the most unique and specific qualities that e-books offer. You can add surveys, order forms for customers to purchase your products, sound and video, even direct links to relevant sites that will expand your e-book outward. The potential is virtually limitless.

There are a lot of ways to use e-books to promote your business and drive qualified visitors to your website. You can use them as a free gift for making a purchase or for filling out a subscription to your newsletter. You can put your e-book on a CD, and you will have an innovative brochure. Blow your competition away by inserting the CD into your sales packages.

The most effective marketing products are those that are unique. Copyright your e-book, and immediately, you have a powerful tool that you can offer to the public. People will have to visit your site to get your e-book, which increases the flow of quality traffic (and the potential of sales and affiliate contacts).

You can extend the value of one e-book by breaking the book down into chapters for a serial e-course, into special reports available only on your website, or into audio or visual tapes. E-books can be broken down into several different promotional materials by excepting some of the articles and using them to promote your product. You can include a catalog in your e-book to promote all the products or services you sell. You can include a “thank you note” for reading your book and an invitation to download a trial version of your product. Or you can include a form for your audience to contact you for further information or with questions, thereby building your business relationships and your mailing list.

No other medium has this kind of flexibility and ability for expansion. Think of your e-book like a spider spinning a beautiful and intricate web.Now go and create that web, and see how many customers and prospects you can catch!

When Del Monte Foods’ Milk-Bone plant in Buffalo, NY, decided to install performance boards to track the plant’s operating performance, the Company chose Hertzler Systems’ GainSeeker Suite technology, rather than a manual dry erase board system. Since installing the Hertzler System, the plant has realized a 3% improvement in performance across all packing lines.

“The Hertzler System’s color-coded and real-time display of production line performance has given our operators a heightened sense of ownership over the plant’s performance,” says Kurt Wolfanger, Del Monte Production Systems Manager. “Rather than analyze performance reports the next day, employees can act on real-time data from the performance boards, leading to faster issue resolution and better overall performance. Furthermore, this system will allow us to maintain a historical record of our performance, which will guide our long-term improvement efforts.”

Evan Miller, President of Hertzler Systems, points out several benefits of an automated performance board system such as Hertzler Systems’, noting,  “Hertzler is light years ahead of the dry erase board system. An automated computer system with a database behind it gives our customers the ability to track trends over time and make much better use of their data, especially with advanced features such as charting capabilities and drill-down options..

Introduction

In Part I of this two part article I want to cover a number of areas where you can make adjustments in your companies IT operations in 2009. There is no doubt that 2009 is going to be a difficult year for business. You can go into the New Year with one of two mindsets; "We’re going to stay the course and hope for the best" or "We will look at this economy as an opportunity to reinvent ourselves into a lean, agile, flexible, competitor in our market." My goal is to have you see 2009 as a time of opportunity to find ways of doing the same, or more, with less. Make 2009 the year you use IT to make your company become a lean, agile, market competitor.

How many users are you providing services for 2009? - It will be very important to closely work with executive management to estimate the services your IT department is going to provide in 2009. Avoid overreacting to the current economic downturn and arbitrarily reducing IT staff without serious consideration of the costs involved in hiring replacements later. Replacing experienced staff later costs more than having retained the original staff. Layoffs are a last resort. Use them sparingly.

What contingencies are there to fill in the gaps? - If you have already reduced your workforce and find you suddenly have skills gaps, one way is to fill in with contractors. Just be sure to manage them carefully and avoid situations where your contractor’s time gets misused. Make certain that everyone in your organization understands that contractors are there for specific purposes. Keep your contractors on task so they can get your work finished quickly otherwise the cost of a contractor can quickly surpass the salary and benefits of the original staff they are filling in for.

What initiatives and projects are you going forward with in 2009? - Consider your companies needs and think in terms of rapid deployment. Any initiative that takes more than a quarter may need to be re-evaluated and shelved until such time as your company’s economy allows for creating a long-term strategy again. Right now, the sooner you can get a project completed and into production, the sooner your company can take advantage of its benefits. 2009 is going to be about which company’s are ready to take advantage in their marketplace and whether your company will be ready to act when the time is right.

Dam Your Bandwidth - Make sure that your business comes first, ahead of providing access to streaming audio & video, online shopping, etc. In the past, I’ve had clients ask me to troubleshoot a "slow" network that was nothing more than excessive Internet traffic. In one case, there were 16 users with live NYSE steams, 12 more users trying to stream full length movies, and 3 online gamers, all pulling on a single T1. As difficult as it is to limit personal Internet access, reducing personal use to short periods of time after the production day is over is a reasonable solution.

How Flexible is your Network? - Now is also a good time to look at how flexible your network infrastructure is. It is always a good idea to have a migration plan ready that can handle issues like a change in ISP, the relocation of your headquarters, the addition of a satellite office, or the spin-off of a division. Stay ahead of the game by having basic contingency plans drafted well ahead of time. Keep the lines of communication with executive management wide open so you can anticipate changes and are prepared to quickly and professionally adapt in 2009.

Restock Your Website - Take advantage of the New Year by updating your companies website to show the world that your organization is going into 2009 with a fresh new look and a positive outlook. From then on, be sure to keep everything on your company website fresh and informative. Create new reasons for people to want to revisit your site often. Setup links to your industries latest developments or any other links that will bring your current and future customers back to your site to see what’s developing. Use the power of the press release to your advantage by announcing everything positive happening in your company. In 2009, you’re going to need to find new ways to keep your market focused on your business.

Wiki This and Wiki That - A Wiki, the Hawaiian word for "fast," is a webpage that anyone with access can contribute content to. Wiki pages are written in simplified HTML or WikiText. Businesses of all sizes are using Wiki’s. Ward Cunningham, developer of the first wiki software, WikiWikiWeb, originally described Wiki as "the simplest online database that could possibly work." Examples of its use include Intranets and knowledgebase’s. Setup Wikis on your company’s internal network and use them to encourage management, users, vendors, and even your customers. Make Wiki’s a means of collectively defining your company’s direction and progress to everyone within the organization. Use Wiki knowledge to put everyone on the same page.

Summary

In Part II I will explore areas in the data center where costs can be reduced and value added.

Ebooks are part of the new frontier of cyberspace. They are an entirely new medium for sharing marketing information, ideas, techniques, and expert knowledge. Each day the number of people accessing the Internet grows, causing the exposure of your eBooks to increase incrementally. It’s obvious why electronic self-publishing has become so popular so quickly.

Ebooks are fairly easy to produce, and their production cost is inexpensive. Just think about it: you don’t need a publisher, an agent, a printing press, offset film, ink, paper, or even a distributor. You just need a great concept, the ability to write it or to hire a writer, and the right software.

Additionally, ebooks are easily and rapidly distributed online. They are also easily updated; they do not require a second print run. Ebooks are also immediately obtainable. You don’t have to go to a bookstore or search through endless titles at an online bookstore. All you have to do is download it from a website, and presto! It’s on your computer, ready to be read.

Ebooks have a particular kind of permanence that other mediums do not possess. Television shows and radio shows air once, for more details visit to www.easy-pdf-toolkit.com and then may rerun a few times. Another wonderful quality is that ebooks have no barriers in terms of publishing.
Finally, you have creative control over your eBooks. You don’t have to compromise with an editor or the publishing trends of the time. You don’t have to haggle with a designer or wait for copyedited galleys to arrive by snail mail. You are in complete control of the design and the text.

How to Use ebooks for Marketing and Promotion:

There are innumerable ways to use ebooks to promote your business and drive quality traffic to your website. Once posted on your site, you can turn them into a daily course, which brings your customer back to read the next chapter. You can use them as a free gift for making a purchase or for filling out a survey. Put your eBooks on a disc, for more details visit to www.create-free-pdf.com and you will have an innovative brochure. Blow your competition away by inserting the disc into your sales packages.

The most effective marketing products are those that are unique. Copyright your eBooks, and immediately, you have a powerful tool that you and you alone, can offer to the public. People will have to visit your site to acquire your eBooks, which increases the flow of quality traffic and the potential of sales and affiliate contacts.

Make sure that you keep your eBooks current. Update it frequently as the market and trends change. Add new advice and techniques to show your prospects how your goods or services can enrich their lives.
Another phenomenal advantage of ebooks is that you can test their marketing potential without putting out hardly any cash at all. You can even produce an eBooks one copy at a time, each time you receive an order, eliminating the need for storage and inventory.
Use your eBooks to discover what the specific goals and problems are in your specific industry. Then figure out how to solve these problems, and publish an eBooks with this invaluable information. This will increase the value of your business, upgrade your reputation, and get you known as an expert in your field.

You can extend the value of single eBooks by breaking the book down into chapters for a serial course, into special reports available on your website, or into audio or visual tapes. Ebooks can be broken down into several different promotional materials by accepting some of the articles and using them to promote your product.
No other medium has this kind of flexibility and ability for expansion. Think of your eBooks like a spider spinning a beautiful and intricate web. Now go and create that web, and see how many customers and prospects you can catch!

Today’s editing computers are a marvel in my opinion. Did you know that before computers, it took around one million dollars of equipment to stock a professional editing room? You needed multiple tape decks, a switcher, an effects generator, a character generator, an audio mixer, signal enhancers, multiple monitors and years of experience to operate it all.
To rent out all this stuff by the hour, it cost $500-$1,000 per hour to edit. A thirty second spot could easily take ten hours to edit, even a relatively simple one. That’s ten grand just for one step in the production of something that lasts half a measly minute!

Ouch!

We’ve got it great compared to that. Today, ten grand is More than enough to buy a total system and all the software you’d ever need to edit a lifetime of shows.

Computer editing is loads of fun and the creative possibilities are endless.

Computer editing revolutionized the entire television and video production industry. Computer video editing put power in the hands of the little guy, not just the companies that could afford million-dollar edit suites.

For a small investment, (maybe nothing beyond a computer that has free video editing software already on it) you have the opportunity to produce professional quality edited video stories.

I got windows movie maker version 5.1 free on the Compaq I bought at Sams Club for half-off after Christmas.

Movie maker will easily edit together you video and add professional looking graphics. You have two lines of audio that you can cut and paste. Any Mac comes with free iMovie, which is probably a better program than movie maker and certainly a killer freebie. Both of them are killer freebies. If you want more creative and complex editing options than what freebies give you, you can get awesome software for $50-$300. If you go full tilt boogie, software that Hollywood uses can be had for $1,300 Apple’s final cut pro, now called Studio 2, is the ultimate video editing software experience in my humble opinion.

When FCP first came on the market, it was chump change at $1,000, compared to its competitor, Avid with it’s $50,000 version of media composer. At the time, people were clamoring to learn media composer because it seemed like such a revolutionary bargain compared to the million-dollar fully equipped suites. Then, all of a sudden, you can get a program equal to media composer for just a grand? Holy crap!

Final cut pro’s price today of $1,299 might seem high to newbies, but the power of FCP can not be understated. It can do anything you can imagine and then some. Hollywood uses FCP. However, chances are you’re not Hollywood bound. Final cut express is only $300 and gives you all the punch you’d probably ever want unless you’re competing on the very uppermost levels. FCE is what I just bought.

Many companies put out video editing software but I must confess my prejudice for Macs and Apple editing software. That’s what I always used when working for large companies and the vast majority of professionals I know prefer Apple computers to PCs for video editing and other large-file creative tasks. There’re a million and one reasons for that, but I’ve seen such heated debates about the topic, it’s scary. Here’s an actual conversation

I witnessed: We’ll get PC’s for editing over my dead body! That can be arranged! I hate those crazy things!

I try not to get that hot about it, but my money goes to Apple.

Since PCs solidly dominate the market whether I think they should or not, there are plenty of video editing programs for the PC market.

Sony Vegas movie studio is popular. I’ve seen it for $99 at the Best Buy store down the street and for $63.99 on Amazon. The reviews are mixed, some people give up in confusion but others plod through the learning curve and say it’s a good program. It can do quite a bit more than the freebies.

Corel DVD movie maker 6 goes for about $48 on Amazon and pinnacle studio runs about $50. Neither is quite as sophisticated as Sony Vegas, but as the price indicates, you can do more with them than you can with the freebies.

Corel paint shop pro for still picture and Sony Vegas combine into one and they call it Corel Sony visual creation. $110 on Amazon.

Video editing software has a learning curve, but it’s really not any more difficult than using a word processing program.

Keep in mind that video editing demands a lot of your computer. Video files are huge, and making them spin and dance requires power. Get the biggest, most powerful computer you can afford. The Mac G-5 blows any other computer out of the pond when it comes to computer video editing. But whatever you have can work.

Choosing the best video editing software can seem a daunting task given the wide range of products available at the moment. However with a little help to remain focused on what is important you should be able to make a good choice.

One of the key points to keep in mind is, “What is it that I am I REALLY going to do with the video editing software that I choose?” The answer to that question has to remain uppermost in your mind when selecting the best video editing software for you.

All of the major home video editing software companies offer camcorder to DVD video editing solutions that make them almost inseparable from each other. So concentrate on what you REALLY need.

The first thing to establish is what is the format of the material you will be working with and what will be the formats that you will want to produce in the end. Input will be determined by your camcorder or your DVD recorder or whatever the source of your material is. Take note of the format your device records in and make sure that one is covered first.

Then realistically take a look at how you would most likely distribute your final videos. DVD? Blu-Ray? Uploading to YouTube or similar? Make sure the software you choose can output to the format you want.

So, your first task in deciding on what video editing software is suitable for you is to work out what your most common source video files will be and what your most common video output will be. That represents the core of what you will be using the software for and should be your main focus.

Like any other competitive market, video editing software is caught up in a never ending race to keep up with technology as it develops and still make the product seem “sexy” to the customer. The point is you probably don’t WANT to buy video editing software. What you WANT is a finished video production.

The problem for the software company is that they know you NEED to buy video editing software but that is not what you WANT! They have to make you WANT it! And because of that we get “bells and whistles” features that make you WANT IT but most likely will never need.

Video Transitions:
Transitions are the little inserts that go in between two clips to make the scene change. If you look at a movie you will notice when the scene changes it either cuts to the next scene with no transition, this is called cut or a straight cut. It fades to black then fades into the next scene from black called a cross fade through black. Or, finally, the two scenes merge into each other softly and this one is called a cross fade. There you have it, pretty well the entire gamut of transitions that professional video editors use!

All video editing software programs offer at least 50 transitions each. Newbies use ALL the available transitions because they look cool the first time they see them. The reality is NOBODY ever, ever wants to go back to their house again to look at their latest production because their heads are still spinning from the last one! Ignore transitions as a deciding factor, all video editing software programs have them and they all have more than you need.

Video Overlay:
An overlay track, simply put, is the ability to put one video in the background and have another visible on top of it. It is that “picture in picture” effect you have seen on TV and in movies. You can also put subtitles in an overlay track or still photos or a bunch of other things to really get creative. You need about five for good control but you would never use more than that otherwise, once again, no-one is going to want to watch the mess you have created!

Audio:
There is no video editing software at the consumer level that offers truly excellent audio control and features. They are video editing programs not audio editing programs. Some have pretty good control, some don’t, if you are going to demand pro level audio then you need dedicated software for that.

The ability to handle Dolby 2 channel is a bare minimum and 5:1 Surround should be standard. The program should offer two audio tracks to play with in addition to the sound in the video track. That leaves you plenty of room for music, narration or effects.

Smart Render:
Rendering is the term used when the video editing software is making the final file of your newly created video. Up until rendering, in any consumer level video editing software, all the cuts, additions, changes and adjustments you have been making are “virtual.” The original footage is never touched. So rendering puts all that together and produces your final video file in the format you have chosen as the viewing format.

Any of the highly compressed formats such as MPEG2 (for DVDs), MPEG4 etc invariably suffer from loss of quality when they are re-rendered. The degree of loss of quality varies but it is essential that any video editing software you choose has the ability to recognise those files it does not need to re-render and simply copy those sections resulting in the high quality possible being retained. It should also offer good control over the properties of the final video.

So there you have it, stay focused on what is important and keep the “gee whiz” stuff to a minimum and you will do fine!
