My band is gonna start recording stuff eventually, so….yeah. Something that would be ideal for rock/metal/alternative please. Thanks ninjas.

Audacity is good…but not really. You are extremely limited in what you can do.

Ardour isn’t free, but you can try the full version for free for as long as you like. Reaper is a very good program that lets you try the full version for a month, after that it is $60 (which is a steal). I would be cautious with free DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations), since frequently, you get what you pay for.

Also, I assume you will need some sort of interface. Many manufacturers include their DAW with their interface.

I want to try it just for fun. I don’t want viruses in it, but if there is no good free software is there any worth buying? Any ideas?
I am a music newbie.

If it’s free it is because it is not worth selling. If you want to produce music, invest what you can afford and you’ll be glad you did. i tried my hand at a cheap setup in the past and the music sounded cheap + you’re very limited in what you can create.

Buy decent software / hardware with a friend to share the cost. Best advice I can give.

Blog Ideas

Tutorials and How-to’s:
These are very good ways to not only attract visitors, but also keep them coming back. Tutorials are very easily spread, being so useful people will constantly link them on to others!

Interviews:
On my website - (www.morbid skies.com) - I do interviews with bands and members of the music media, as my forum is based on metal music. If for example, your ‘niche’ is forum and website administration, it’s a good idea to interview administrators of popular websites or forum/website software developers!
Make sure your interviews are related!

Questions:
Have an area where people can ask questions, then answer them in a set post time (weekly for example).

Get the Users involved:
If you want your users to get involved and keep coming back, allow them to submit articles. I would however, advise that you view them before they are displayed to the public!

Reviews:
Reviews are always a good read! If you’re running a gaming blog, review games. Running a movie blog? Review movies. So on and so forth.

Mission Statement:
People need to know what your blog is about, provide them with a mission statement. (mission statement; the objectives and aims of a business and/or organisation)

Welcome Message:
Would you go to a new school without being welcome? No. So don’t invite people to your blog without being welcomed! Here is mine (top right); http://twisted-concept.blogspot.com/ -  Excuse the blog content, it is a very confined niche!

Pictures:
Personally, I never add pictures to my blog posts, but that’s because it is based on horror and literature. However, I have a handful of images down the right side to make it easier on the readers eyes and create more of an atmosphere!

In-linking:
If you make a post about course choices in college, and you already have one about colleges in your local area, link to the other post! Do this with any genre naturally…

Cartoons:
Cartoons are great fun! For example, if you’re making a post about the occupation of the Rhineland after WW1, post one of David Low’s (an political cartoonist of the time) anti-appeasement cartoons!

Debating:
Take a post from a rival site/forum/blog (don’t be offensive) and argue against it in your post. This will spark a debate, which involves nice traffic numbers!

Split Posts:
This can be great, or very ‘un-great’. End the first post with a question, such as… So we know now that Manchester City want Kaka, in part 2 we’ll discuss if Kaka wants Manchester City.

Polls:
Everybody loves polls! You only need one on your main page and you instantly have a way for people to interact with your blog. I had one asking if my stories were gruesome enough, make it relative!

i have an Asus laptop with Windows Vista. i luv making my own music and i want to start recording it. but wat is the best music recording software that i can use and it won’t take up too much space on my computer.

Try Audacity - it’s free
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Also try Free Audio Editor which has a recording facility; it may be a little easier to use than audacity

No previous recording experience is required when you launch Cakewalk’s Music Creator 5! Its video tutorials and getting started guide assist you through installation and setup process, making it easier for you to plug in your microphone, MIDI controller, guitar or any other instrument and immediately start recording. MC 5 features a brand new, simplified user interface with drag and drop editing options, new track templates and assistant tools. Don’t have a band? When youre finished with your project, burn it to CD or upload it to your website, blog and MySpace page to share with friends.

EDIT 6: My video has been shown at “Forward - The Viral Video Award” (interfilm Berlin)! Make sure you check out all the awesome videos there too. =D

EDIT 5: StepMania simfile available for extended version, thanks to Ashpotter!

EDIT 4: Make sure you get this version of ModPlug Tracker:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-Editors-Recorders/MODPlug-Tracker.shtml
That will install itself as a program, which you can start running from the Start menu, as you would with most other programs. ;)

A guide for getting started with ModPlug Tracker can be found here (I didn’t make it) :
http://tesla.rcub.bg.ac.yu/~xpio/modplug/

EDIT 3: Just to try to avoid me having to reply to every other comment which says that it must have taken me ages to make, or that I must’ve been bored:
This was just a way for me to pass a few hours of boredom. Yes, I WAS bored. No, I’m not trying to “prove” anything - that this is what I’m “capable of”. I just thought I’d upload my music as a video here, to YouTube. I’m not the one who spread it around to Digg or random blogs, - I uploaded it here at YouTube some time back in December 2007 and it has only just “taken off”, after all.

EDIT 2: I’m making the IT file be available now too, don’t really mind any more. I guess I’m too busy working on new things (not mod music) to worry about the ‘old’ ones. :P

A piece of music I made using some of the various sounds Windows XP and 98 come with.

The music is about 1:31 long. After that, I show the sounds which were used.

The video is screen-captured from ModPlug Tracker, the program which I made the music on.

Windows XPと98で来る様々な音を使用されることで、俺が作った音楽。

CBR (320 Kb/sec) EXTENDED VERSION:
If the extended version above gives you problems - such as cutting off at the end, because the duration was miscalculated (appears to happen with iTunes?), then I’ve made this constant bitrate version, as an alternative to the variable bitrate version above. This will fix the cutting off and miscalculation of the duration, but is a little unnecessarily large and is a little lower quality than VBR (but highest possible when using CBR).

Think Thor is ONLY a versatile and amazing sounding synth? Think again because Thor is also one of the coolest audio processors you’ve got… you just didn’t know it.

The best part? James not only shows us how to process audio through Thor, but he’s created some Thor combinator patches to get you started!
