Do you think this is nuts? I’m going to try to review all of the major DAWs, in other words all of the music editing software, music mixing software, music making software, recording music software, audio production software, whatever you want to call it. While each one has acquired it’s own fanbase, not many musicians would be tempted to trash an investment that can sometimes have a very long tedious learning curve to make the switch to another program, or would you? Another case in point is that the biggest, most popular programs have already reached a higher level of growth. But on the other hand,  I don’t believe that if any or all of them vanished overnight leaving only one, would it be that terrible? They all work well and you’d still be able to make great music! (assuming that you make great music:).

It’s nice to be able to compare/review each product because they all have different strenghts and weaknesses. Hopefully this will help you with your decision making as to what audio production software would work the best for you and your budget constraints (if any exist). The nice thing about some of these programs is that they have a less expensive version available that while not quite as fancy as the full fledged version, will still get the job done quite nicely.

So what about that learning curve? Don’t bury your head in the sand here. There will always be a learning curve. Like most programs available now, they are becoming more and more in tune with either Mac or Windows operating systems, which helps to lesson that fabled learning curve. Not to mention that these music editing software programs tend to borrow from the competition, hence making it easier to learn them and if you stay with the same company, but upgrade you’ve got even less of a learning curve. So you can relax it shouldn’t be that hard.

Sometime down the line you may want to switch. Like every thing else in this world nothing is static or stays the same, including recording music software programs. At some point you may want to try another product, it might have some feature in it that the program that you’re currently using is missing and you know that you just can’t live without. Personally I love technology and want every new gadget out there. If you’re anything like me I’m sure that eventually you are gonna want to try something new.

With that said I need to remind you that again nothing is static here. These music making software programs are constantly being changed and updated. Which on the one hand is great, but on the other hand can be frustrating. It’s the nature of the beast or anything electronic nowadays. Repeat after me, there will always be upgrades and improvements. Some you will love, others you will hate. Get use to it.

Next up, support. Well we all know what support can be like. Some audio production software companies do a pretty good job with support, others not so hot. I would suggest that you first check out any FAQ’s and second if they have a forum go there. Forums can oftentimes be the best place to find answers to your questions or problems. Most of these music making software companies are not set up for unlimited support. Use it wisely.

I would like to do video production with decent audio on computer.
What software and hardware do your use, or recommend, that is not too expensive, but will still deliver quality results.
Also, I want the installation and operating processes, to be user friendly, yet be capable of more complicated editing as my experience improves.
I have many ideas, which I think will appeal, to an audience on youtube.
Thanks, but I actually have a Canon GL1 (I know it’s a little bit older, but still works great) and my intention, is to write and direct my own short videos, add audio tracks, and sound, and edit this all on my computer.
Now the computer is also a little but older, but has this capacity:
180GB HD
512MB Ram.
And sufficient speed, that when I turn off all the background programs, it should be able to edit movies with sound.

would say Sony Vegas pro is a way to go.. Really simple program and easy to learn. You can get from Aries-Films file section. Just google for Aries-Films. Thats it.

I really wanna get into audio production and i’ve tried FL Studio 7 and 8 and they are both too complicated. Does anyone know any good audio production softwares? I need at least a free trial to see if it’s good and then maybe i’ll buy it.

It doesn’t really get much easier than FL Studio… but it’s definitely not everybody’s cup of tea.

You could try:
- Reason
- SONAR
- Ableton Live
- REAPER

hey just wondering what is a good cheap recording software for music, and also i want to add my amplifier to the tracks, so what do i need to buy to plug y amp into the computer to get the amp sound, and also what program would have drum loops aswell, thanks!

If you have an AUX Output on your amplifier for an External speaker system, then you run a chord from that to a Line In jack on your audio/digital USB computer interface and you can record directly from your amplifier. That is the best idea to get a clean sound. The alternative is to place a good studio quality directional mic in front of the amplifier between the center and the edge of the speaker.

You might be wondering what an audio/digital USB computer interface is. Your computer did not come with one. Generally that is something you purchase to go with your recording software or DAW (digital audio workstation). There are many different kinds of DAWs on the market. Some of them (like Audacity) are even free. I don’t know what your goal is for your music but, if you are serious about writing and recording your own music and you intend to sell it on Amazon.com, iTunes, CD Baby, or Tunecore, then you need to produce broadcast quality music which you can then also get local radio stations to play for you. In that case, there is only one DAW you should consider and it comes with lots of drum tracks and other loops and sounds and it even comes with it’s own audio.digital USB computer interface with a built in music quality sound card. The sound card in your computer was not intended for recording music. That DAW is also the industry standard software for recording and the vast majority of music that you hear on the radio or through the internet was recorded using this software. That software is Pro Tools. When you compare it with the best recording software products out there is seems very reasonably priced. http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Digidesign-Mbox-2-Mini-Recording-Bundle?sku=702525 - This package deal even includes a studio monitor so you can listen to your recording through the Pro Tools interface, a very good studio quality microphone (I have this microphone, it’s great) and a mic stand and all the cables you need along with the Pro Tools LE software.

So, if you are serious about your music, I would not recommend anything else. Pro Tools! There really is no substitute!

If you’ve got a hardware effect device that you just love… maybe it’s a lo-fi effect you can’t live without… or maybe it’s a Lexicon 960L… you can wire these effects into Record’s FX sends and Inserts to process audio tracks and devices. This week I show you the literal “ins and outs” of using external FX with Record and how to make them a permanent part of your song for exporting and archiving.

Try Audacity. I haven’t used it much, so I don’t know all the features, but it’s a great free audio program.
