Do you think this is nuts? I’m going to try to review all of the major DAWs, in other words all of the music editing software, music mixing software, music making software, recording music software, audio production software, whatever you want to call it. While each one has acquired it’s own fanbase, not many musicians would be tempted to trash an investment that can sometimes have a very long tedious learning curve to make the switch to another program, or would you? Another case in point is that the biggest, most popular programs have already reached a higher level of growth. But on the other hand,  I don’t believe that if any or all of them vanished overnight leaving only one, would it be that terrible? They all work well and you’d still be able to make great music! (assuming that you make great music:).

It’s nice to be able to compare/review each product because they all have different strenghts and weaknesses. Hopefully this will help you with your decision making as to what audio production software would work the best for you and your budget constraints (if any exist). The nice thing about some of these programs is that they have a less expensive version available that while not quite as fancy as the full fledged version, will still get the job done quite nicely.

So what about that learning curve? Don’t bury your head in the sand here. There will always be a learning curve. Like most programs available now, they are becoming more and more in tune with either Mac or Windows operating systems, which helps to lesson that fabled learning curve. Not to mention that these music editing software programs tend to borrow from the competition, hence making it easier to learn them and if you stay with the same company, but upgrade you’ve got even less of a learning curve. So you can relax it shouldn’t be that hard.

Sometime down the line you may want to switch. Like every thing else in this world nothing is static or stays the same, including recording music software programs. At some point you may want to try another product, it might have some feature in it that the program that you’re currently using is missing and you know that you just can’t live without. Personally I love technology and want every new gadget out there. If you’re anything like me I’m sure that eventually you are gonna want to try something new.

With that said I need to remind you that again nothing is static here. These music making software programs are constantly being changed and updated. Which on the one hand is great, but on the other hand can be frustrating. It’s the nature of the beast or anything electronic nowadays. Repeat after me, there will always be upgrades and improvements. Some you will love, others you will hate. Get use to it.

Next up, support. Well we all know what support can be like. Some audio production software companies do a pretty good job with support, others not so hot. I would suggest that you first check out any FAQ’s and second if they have a forum go there. Forums can oftentimes be the best place to find answers to your questions or problems. Most of these music making software companies are not set up for unlimited support. Use it wisely.

I have a PC and want to do a little singing/guitar covers and looking for some good software that would do the same things a Garage Band. Anyone know of anything that is good and wont break the bank?

Have you tried using Dubturbo? Its almost the same with garage bank.
Its not free but its cheap. A full version will only cost you $30.
Dubturbo is not a software for beginners but many first timers prefer to use it because it is easy to use and uncomplicated.
Many Pro’s were also using it because of its professional quality music output.
It can do dubsteps, recordings, remixes, techno, trance and etc
Tutorials and Demos are also provided when you download the software.

Besides fruit loops . Can someone recommend a good music making software? (I dont care if it’s not free or what not )

I want it to be easy to use and more efficient with better sounding than fruit loops. And with alot of instruments like the harp, flute ,violin and piano

GarageBand comes with Mac computers, but it’s not available for any other OS.
You can also consider MAGIX Music Maker. It is pretty straightforward and has a lot of instruments and a good amount of features and enhancements.

All I want is somewhere to jot down my songs in sheet music format. I don’t need to be able to preview it or record my keystrokes or anything, I just need to be able to set a time and key signature and then click where I want notes.

It sounds like you want a copy of MuseScore free music and composition software. http://musescore.org/

I don’t know much about this kinda thing but i am looking to download free music making software for my laptop that i could use to make music. I play drums to id like to mostly mess around with making beats and stuff for fun. but id also maybe like to put music behind it too, to make some dance or dubstep music or something. Preferably id like some software that isn’t too hard to use because i m just doing this for fun. Thanks

I personally sugggest dubturbo. Its easy to use and uncomplicated.
It’s user interface is easy to understand. However a full version of dubturbo will cost you $30, but if you try too look around and compare its price from other software, you will find this software as the cheapest one. Its cheap but performance is almost the same with those $100 music software.
Practically saying, dubturbo is a wise choice.
Aside from making beats, dubturbo can also be used to make dubsteps, remixes, techno tunes, and any music editings.
If you do not have the cash then you are always welcome to check out its trial version
Hope this helps.

I want to buy a mic and record some vocals while creating some digital/techno music for the background. What’s a decent free download I can use? Someone suggested ‘Audacity’ to me, but I wanted to check to see what else is out there. Thanks!

You can choose between FL studio and Dubturbo but I personally recommend DUBTURBO.
Dubturbo (full version) is way cheaper than fl costing around $30. Although performance are almost the same, dubturbo is easier to use and Uncomplicated. Aside from making beats, remixes, technos, dubsteps you can also edit any music you have using it.
If you’re a beginner you do not have to worry because you will be provided with video tutorials and demos to get you started. And one thing, it works well in almost all platforms (mac, windows, android and etc) You can check out my source for a software review. It will be a good source.

When James goes out to give Reason presentations and demos, he gets one question more often than anything else: “How do I hook up this very cool Vocoder that makes no sound when I try to use it?” Vocoders are neat but they don’t work the way we’re used to synths working at first glance. There are no oscillators or LFOs… there are instead Carriers and Modulators… bands… and other weirdness. But this week James breaks it all down simply and he’ll have you getting in touch with your inner-robot in no time!
